Trains O Scale: Five Mistakes To Avoid

Engines:

Make sure to buy the highest-quality Trains O Scale engine that you can. If you buy a Trains O Scale diesel engine, make sure it has all-wheel electrical pickup. Low-priced diesels often run better than similarly priced steam engines within the Trains O Scale range.

When buying an engine go for quality over price every time. There is nothing wrong with saving money but this is one item of kit you do not want to save on. When buying a diesel engine you need to get one with All Wheel pickups. As a general rule you will get better value for money buying a diesel engine than buying a steam engine for the same price.

Track:

O Scale track is more confusing than most. Originally O Scale track had 3 rails, however as things moved on the track changed to 2 rail track. This only affects your locomotives! You must remember this. It only effects these due to the pickups, the passenger cars and freight cars are fine.
To add to the confusion there is also narrow gauge as well as the standard guage track, so make sure when buying track that it matches your set or vise versa.

When buying O Scale track have a look at track with a cast plastic roadbed as this is better quality. It ensures the pieces of track fit together more smoothly, preventing electrical problems. Track with Nickel silver rails are also recommended. Atlas and Bachmann both make very high quality track and I would recommend buying both of them.

Scenery:

You would think you were on safe ground when buying/making your scenery but there is one mistake that you can make and boy do people make it.
People buy scenery that is out of Scale. By this I mean they buy scenery that does not match the proportions of your train set.

Image seeing your train go past a car in your scenery but the car is the same height as the train. It would look odd wouldn’t it? You can buy scenery and accessories that are scecifically for a Scale of train however a lot of people just buy generic scenery from hobby stores. So how do you make sure you buy the right stuff? When you go to buy you items take with you one person that is perfectly scaled to your O Scale train set. Now when you see something you want simply stick your character next to the item and immediately you will be able to see whether it looks out of scale or not.

Transformer:

To be honest transformers are pretty universal you can’t really go that wrong, certainly if you buy from a respected manufacturer. However I will say that if you have many engines and accessories running simultaneously on your Trains O Scale layout then you may have to consider getting a transformer that will deliver 18 VA or more.

Turning Radius:

This is something that many people get wrong but is very easy to avoid. Trains O Scale have a minimum turning radius of sixty centimetres (24 Inches). If you do not adhere to this then your trains could derail and come off the track. This is one problem with Trains O Scale, due to the fact they are so big they do not coner tightly at all.
